Wi-Fi system

The Wi-Fi system controller feature was added to all Keenetic routers beginning from KeeneticOS 2.15 to automatically manage access points connected via an Ethernet cable.

Wi-Fi system controller allows you to add additional Keenetic devices to the main router and to organize a single wireless system with centralized management and monitoring. It doesn't need Internet connection or cloud service access. Controller is supported by all new Keenetic models (with KN-xxxx index) from Start to Ultra model and is also available on previous generation devices, which support Keenetic OS 2.15 (Giga III, Ultra II, Air, Extra II, Start II, Lite III Rev.B и 4G III Rev.B).

Let's assume you already have one Keenetic running in the Router mode, and you want to expand your Wi-Fi network coverage. Add another Keenetic to your network by connecting it to the main one by Ethernet cable and switch it to the 'Access Point' mode. You can add as many additional Keenetics to your own network as you need. The main Keenetic router will act as a controller of the Wi-Fi system and will allow you to manage connected Keenetics (extenders). The Wi-Fi network settings will become shared, so you will not need to configure them separately on each extender (at the same time, the main Wi-Fi network settings will be blocked for editing on subordinate access points). For example, if you want to change the network name (SSID), it is enough to change it only on the controller, and it will change it on all subordinate extender. Beside the main wireless network Guest and other segments' Wi-Fi settings will also be expanded to each Wi-Fi system member.

NOTE: Important! For proper operation of the Wi-Fi system, connect additional devices only in the 'Access Point' mode.

To operate a Wi-Fi system, it is necessary to install a special component 'Wi-Fi system controller' in the main router beforehand. This can be done on the page 'General system settings' in the 'Updates and component options' by clicking on 'Component options'.

Controller function is to be configured in the web configurator on the 'Wi-Fi system' page.

In order to connect to the Wi-Fi controller change the operating mode of the additional Keenetic to 'Access Point', so it may work as a Wi-Fi system extender, and connect it with an Ethernet cable to the main Keenetic router.

After the connection, the extender will appear on the 'Devices' tab in the 'Nodes available for adding to the Wi-Fi system' list.

NOTE: Important! To work with the Wi-Fi controller, extender (Keenetic in the Access Point mode) must have the KeeneticOS version 2.14.C.0.0-0 or higher.

Controller will automatically detect the version of the operating system of the connected extender and display it in the proper field. Click 'Acquire' button to update the KeeneticOS version of the extender (if needed) and add it to the Wi-Fi system.

After updating the operating system, the extender will appear in the list of 'Nodes included in the Wi-Fi system'.

TIP: Tip: If for some reason the device to be connected does not appear in the list of potential or active extenders, we recommend that you reset it to the factory defaults and reconnect.

After connecting to the Wi-Fi controller, you will see the message 'This device is administered by the Wi-Fi system controller' in the extender's web interface.

NOTE: Important! On the device controlled by the Wi-Fi system controller, in the basic wireless network settings - 'Network name' (SSID), 'Network protection' (security protocol), 'Password' (security key), seamless roaming settings, IP parameters, access control lists (White / Black) will not be available for editing. They can be changed only on the controller (main router).

The 'Devices' tab displays all potential and active extenders (access points) of the Wi-Fi system.

The 'Transition log' tab displays transitions of wireless devices between the Wi-Fi system members. The following events are registered:

  • Connection;
  • Left;
  • Transition (standard transition without 'accelerators', the client simply disconnected from one point and connected to another);
  • PMK cache transition (fast transition using PMKID cache, Pairwise Master Key Identifier);
  • Fast transition (the fastest transition with 802.11r and FT mode).

When the transition log is full, you can use the filter.
